The flag
The Indian flag is a tricolour with dark saffron at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. In the middle of the white band, there is a blue wheel that indicates the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law. This is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200th century before christ. The wheel also indicates that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The dark saffron stands for courage and sacrifice, the white stands for peace and truth and the green for faith and fertility.

Location
India is situated in South-East Asia. The country shaped like a triangel is prodding out from the Himalays in the north into the Bay of Bengal in South. India shares a boder with Nepal, Bhutan in the north, Myanamar and Bangladesh in the north-east and Pakistan in the west.

Topography
India consists of 2 main areas, the Deccan plateu in the south and the mountains in the north.

Climate
The climate is mainly tropical, with the biggest temperature variations in the north. The rain is dependent on the monsoon winds. In the summer the monsoonwind blows towards the Deccan westcoast and gives rain there and in the lowlands beneath the Himalayas. In the winter the wind blows from north-west and gives rain on the east coast. In the north-east where there is less rain you find the Thar Desert. The temperature follows the monsoon too.India has three major season:
Summer, Winter and monsoon.

Summer (April - June)
Are hot in most parts of India. This is the season to visit the summer resorts of Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital, Kufri and Kashmir valley, Darjeeling, Shilong, Ootacamund, Kodaikanal, Pachmarhi and Mount Abu.

Winter (November - March)
Are pleasant throughout India with bright sunny days. Winter is more severe in the northern plains, and in the foot hills of the Himalayas, while the southern , eastern and western zones of India , remain pleasantly cool.

The monsoons
Break at the beginning of June on the South-west coast of India, and gradually break at all parts of the country, except south-eastern areas. These areas receive most of their rainfall between mid-October and end-December.
